Historical landmarks aren’t just still-standing remains from the bygone eras. Instead, they are the trail marks that can lead us from the present to the frozen past and allow us to take a peek into deceased lifestyles, deep into the ancient cultures, and how life used to be for the human race still climbing the stairs of development and civilization. A place brimming with such ancient history that can distort reality is Jordan, a country with a rich and turbulent history that boasts wonders of Jordan, and landmarks dating back thousands of years.

One of the world’s oldest continually inhabited cities in the world is Amman, the capital of Jordan. Some of its still-standing ruins date back to the Stone Age period. Other historical sites within its borders include the ancient biblical kingdoms of Moab, Gilead, and Edom. We can forget the famous red-stone city of Petra, which was the capital of the Nabataean kingdom in the 6th century BC. Today, the country welcomes thousands of history fanatics, tourists, and travelers to its plethora of fascinating historical places in Jordan.

Jerash, often referred to as the ‘Pompeii of the East,’ is one of the most popular historical sites, not only in Jordan but worldwide. The gorgeous, perfectly preserved architecture in the Jerash Roman ruins, which many believe to be cursed, can mesmerize the eye.Often considered the crossroads of Greco-Roman and Levantine cultures, the site adorns itself with a hippodrome, trading stalls, residences, and temples dedicated to Zeus and Artemis.

It also offers ancient churches, water and sewage systems, two theatres, a mosque, a colonnade, and a Cardo making it one of the most visited historical places in Jordan. One of the most popular sites to visit in Jerash is the Nymphaeum, built in 190 AD.
For all the history buffs from all over the world, hiding near northwestern Jordan is the Ajloun Castle. This castle is a one-of-a-kind siege warfare souvenir from the past.

The nephew of the Muslim military leader Saladin built this castle between the years 1184 and 1188 with the intention of instilling fear in the hearts of the Franks. The castle’s strategic location allowed Saladin’s forces to keep track of the movement of any intruders across the Jordan Valley. Now it is a popular historical place in Jordan, and one where one can really dive into the warfare tactics of the 11th Century.

Mount ‘Auf, commonly known as Jabal Auf, hosts Ajloun Castle. After exploring the exterior of the castle and taking in the expansive views, head inside the Ajloun Archaeological Museum. The museum is located inside the castle and is a great spot to pause and view incredible pottery, ceramics, exhibitions, and artifacts.

The majestic land of Jordan has been a crossroads for travel and culture for centuries. The planes of this country display the many historic events and traces of great civilization like pages in a book. From ancient Roman theatres to castles from Islamic empires, the diversity in the country’s history keeps drawing thousands of tourists annually.

After you’ve had your fill of history, you make your way across the red-toned capital city of Amman. Here, you might hear conversations flowing with Arabic, Syria, Egyptian, and Iraqi accents. If you venture across the Desert Highway, you’ll come across the Bedouin tribes living in communities called Beit Al-Sha’ar or ‘house of hair’.

All this history gives root to an incredibly diverse and rich culture. As a result, Jordan is blessed with a delectable cuisine that immerses many cultures and decorates the tables across the country. From fragrant teas to savoury meats, falafel or baked delights, trying the fantastic Jordanian cuisine is a crucial part of the country’s travel experience.

One of the most popular dessert dishes in Jordan is Knafeh, which is a rich and sweet pastry. The crispy baked pastry is made of semolina or vermicelli noodles that are baked and covered with layered white cheese.

After it reaches a crisp golden brown hue, it is topped with a sugar-based syrup called attar and clotted cream, pistachios or almonds. This is one of the hallmark dishes in Jordan, which you can find in every city.

Offering more rich and exotic tastes, the Bedouin foods are the pride of Jordanian cuisine. Zarb is a Bedouin dish that is slow-cooked in an underground pit for several hours, giving it a distinct earthy and smoky flavour from the hardwood. Most Zarb variations have entire lamb, whole chicken, or parts of both, seasoned and marinated and served over vegetables and rice. It’s one of the best Jordanian dishes and this is typically found in camps near Wadi Rum, where it can be enjoyed best along the scenic valley’s landscape.

With a diverse population of only 10 million, many people lump Jordan under the category of places that have little to offer as a travel destination. However, you will find seasoned travelers and explorers saying otherwise. Jordan is the perfect example of the saying, ‘Big things come in small packages’. From the numerous historically rich sites to the uniquely incredible landscape combination of the Red Sea and the Rum Desert, once you come here, it would be impossible to keep yourself from visiting again.

And as visiting such travel destinations often goes, it’s impossible to get the full travel experience of any country in just a short amount of time. But those who are visiting on a set itinerary or travel schedule don’t often have much of a choice. While you can’t get a comprehensive experience in less than a month, you can certainly enjoy the popular tourist attractions Jordan is famous for. All along with the hospitality of its people and its rich culture in a week.

Making a tour plan for a country with such unending and diverse destinations within a time limit can be a difficult feat. But, we’ve gone ahead and done it for you. We’ve compiled a perfect itinerary for you to spend seven days in Jordan while enjoying the best of all it has to offer for an unforgettable travel experience.

The Perfect Seven-Day Jordan Itinerary

Maybe you’re researching for your first-ever trip to Jordan. Or, maybe it’s second or third here, and you wish to explore all that you couldn’t before. Regardless, this itinerary offers an incredible combination of historical spots, natural landscapes, tourist attractions, and cultural experiences for an unforgettable seven days in Jordan.

Day 1: Amman Tour

Begin your adventure after a lovely Middle Eastern breakfast in the country. We recommend a famous Jordanian breakfast of a bowl of hot fuul, or boiled broad/fava beans mashed with lemon juice, olive oil, and chopped chilies. It’s eaten with freshly baked khubz, or flatbread, and is sure to keep you full for hours. Start your tour of Amman with a visit to the Roman Theater, Amman Citadel, the Jordan Museum, and King Abdullah I Mosque. Be sure to check out the Roman Temple of Hercules.

Stop for a brief lunch at the local eateries and rest for two hours. Next, head on to see the famous 4th-century Byzantine architecture inside the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George. End the day with a delicious dinner of Mansaf at Al Quds, an iconic spot for Jordanian delicacies.

Stop for a quick lunch nearby. Enjoy a camel ride for an immersive experience.

Next, visit the Ajloun Castle, built in 1184 AD by Izz Al-Din Usama, one of Salah Al-Din’s generals. After a thorough look around, head on towards Umm Qais, once known as Gadara. This is a ruined Greco-Roman city where guests can see the Sea of Galilee and the Golan Heights in all their beauty. This site was also made famous by the film Lawrence of Arabia.

Here you can see the unique landscape of canyons, cliffs, dunes, and ancient rock glyphs. Be sure to book a night’s stay at the Bedouin tour camps.
Preparing for Your Trip to Jordan

Despite being the heart of the Middle East, Jordan still doesn’t get the rep that it deserves. This is mainly because of the stigma of it being a ‘desert country’ with nothing much to see. However, those who look past it and visit the country for the first time have only good things to say about it. Learning some travel tips can help you have a pleasant experience when you do visit:

Jordan’s official currency is the Jordanian dinar.

ATMs can be found all over Amman, as well as in larger towns and popular tourist locations.

Carry small amounts of cash with you for small purchases like snacks, cab fares, and tips.

The conversion rate at the time of writing is 1 JOD/1.41 USD.

Arabic is the official language of Jordan, but in tourist areas, English is also commonly spoken.

It will help to know a few basic Arabic words and phrases, such as hello (mer-ha-ba) and thank you (shok-ran).

For a seamless transport experience here, you can hire a car and drive yourself, hire a car with a driver for the duration of the trip, or take a private car or local taxi from point A to point B.

The Best Time to Visit Jordan

You can’t expect a country with a predominantly desert landscape not to leave you sweating as you visit one place after another. For those who wish for a cool and pleasant travel experience in Jordan, plan your trip through March and May. You can also visit Jordan during October and November and enjoy its pleasant weather.

This is the best time to book one of the Bedouin camps in Wadi Rum and enjoy the cool Jordanian nights under the glittery canopy of stars twinkling above you—a dreamlike experience free from any light or noise pollution.

Accommodation in Jordan

The range of accommodation options here matches the diversity of its natural landscape, encompassing anything from five-star hotels to traditional guesthouses.

Everyone can find something to suit their taste, whether it is budget-friendly hostel rooms in Amman and Petra, basic Bedouin camps, or luxurious hotels near the Red Sea. There are a lot of affordable hotels in Jordan that are in the middle price range. These hotels are mostly owned and operated by families.

Shawarma is a Middle Eastern and North African dish that originated in the Ottoman Empire and consists of thinly sliced meat layered in an inverted cone and roasted on a slowly rotating vertical rotisserie or spit. A must-try item of the delectable Jordanian cuisine, the meat traditionally consists of lamb or mutton, but it can also be made from chicken, turkey, beef, or veal. The spice mixes that go in the meat rub can modify the flavors of the Shawarma. It’s commonly served with pickles or onions and tangy sauces and can be eaten wrapped, open-faced, stuffed, or served on plates. Since it’s more of a street food, you can easily find Shawarma throughout the country. However, to try it at its best, head over to the food streets in Amman.

5. Musakhan

Musakhan is a dish from Palestinian cuisine that consists of roasted chicken baked with onions, sumac, allspice, saffron and fried pine nuts. This chicken dish is famous for the distinct flavour that it gets from the high-quality native olive oil used in the marinade. Musakhan is served with traditional Taboun bread, which is baked in stone-lined ovens and serves as an excellent side for absorbing the meaty and hearty flavors of the dish. Since the dish is from the Levant region, it’s readily available in all major restaurants in Amman.

6. Knafeh

While Jordanian cuisine may seem more on the savory side, it does justice to the deserts it offers too. One of the most popular dessert dishes in Jordan is Knafeh, which is a rich and sweet pastry. The crispy baked pastry is made of semolina or vermicelli noodles that are baked and covered with layered white cheese. After it reaches a crisp golden brown hue, it is topped with a sugar-based syrup called attar and clotted cream, pistachios, or almonds. This is one of the hallmark dishes in Jordan, which you can find in every city.

7. Zarb

This is typically found in camps near Wadi Rum, where it can be enjoyed best along the scenic valley’s landscape.

8. Sayadieh

For all the seafood lovers, this is the one. Sayadieh is a fish and rice dish seasoned with cumin, cardamom, and fried onions. It originates from Lebanon and is extremely popular in Jordan since the Jordanian cuisine focuses more on lamb, chicken, and beef.

The highlight of Sayadieh is the fried fish, which can be served whole or cut. It’s served over a platter of hot rice and topped with crispy caramelized onions and a special spicy sauce to blend the flavors together. Head to Aqaba if you wish to try Sayadieh with freshly caught fish from the ports.

9. Mezze

Mezze is a popular eating style throughout the Eastern Mediterranean, North Africa, the Balkans, Western Asia, and the Middle East.
While mezzes appear in many regional cuisines, each culture adds its own variations, specialties and ingredients. Of course, mezze in Jordan is unique and a must-try experience if you’re visiting the country for the first time.
